Custom Cruiser Motorcycle Parts
SERIOUS!!! Motorcycle Building?
I love bikes, both sport and cruisers. I prefer sport for riding, but I would own a Harley in a heartbeat. Unless it was total garbage and rusted to hell.
I want to build a chopper style bike, but have no experience in ANYTHING related to building a motorcycle. I have less than 1 year of riding experience.
What is a decent chopper style bike, that is not difficult to learn how to build, from frame up with either with new parts, or a rebuild. . ??
I have no problem reading manuals, asking for help, etc. I want to make, for lack of a better term, a “custom” bike for me, without it ACTUALLY being custom, like OCC or West Coast Choppers. Some welding may be involved, but most likely not.
Are there any bikes that fit this description. . ??
Any “don’t bother you idiot”, “learn to ride, before you build” and other similar crap will be flagged and reported. I like the hands on part. Riding has nothing to do with this.
You didn’t say if you wanted to modify an existing bike or start from scratch. One of the easiest ways that anyone with even modest mechanical skills can do is to get a complete kit bike and assemble it yourself. It also mostly eliminates the need for welding and fabricating parts, which is hard to do unless you are or know a welder. Some small mounting tabs may still need to be welded to the frame though.
You can also do what I did and hunt around swap meets and ebay to find better deals on parts. I wouldn’t recommend getting the engine that way, though. They all claim to be rebuilt, but you are really taking a gamble sight unseen.
Another thing to think about is if you want a rigid or a swing arm frame. A rigid doesn’t ride too hard if you spring mount the seat. A swing arm is only slightly smoother, because being a custom, most of us make ‘em ride low so you’ll probably have short shocks out back.
Anyway, there’s a lot for you to think about. Do some research and see what style of bike you like.
I think you should look at flyritechoppers.com and suckerpunchsallys.com they make some cool stuff from parts to complete turn key rides. I’m sure you can get one in kit form from either of them if that’s the route you choose. They build around American v-twin motors, but there are other places that have similar stuff for metric engines.
Good luck, and keep beer in the garage, cause you will need some help from your buddies at some points. It’s a boatload of fun, and you won’t believe the feeling of riding something that you built yourself.
